A Whole-body Approach to Physiology

Holistic Practitioners who wish to support the body, need to not only know how that body works, but be able to look at the body in sections and then put it back together as a whole in order truly help tier clients. Eastern modalities are known for having complete paradigms that describe how the body functions all fit together, but (perhaps because of the mechanistic view that western society holds of the body) it is hard to find a holistic view of the body in western herbalism and western alternative medicine. The closest I have seen may be “Functional Medicine” but even that is becoming more and more mechanistic as more western medical doctors “adopt” it and start nudging it more and more into a controlling (diagnose/prescribe) place.

Side note: I’ve see this happen quite a bit with the term Holistic. Much of what is being called “Holistic or Wholistic” since the days of Facebook/Instagram is becoming more and more about style and branding than about underlying philosophy. It’s great that more people are interested and want to learn/experience these methods, but much of the philosophy gets diluted when it becomes more about “what tools, what brands, what modalities” and not about WHY?

To be clear: I’m not talking about individual practitioners or groups of individuals who call themselves holistic or wholistic—those practitioners and producers of holistic products are our peers and colleagues who are “right up our alley”! These people are the community of practitioners who we want to align with. I’m talking about mainstream media, big beauty brands and corporations trying to get in on the "natural" action without doing their homework, and start-ups who have nothing invested in skin care but are “producing a holistic-type product” in order to sell a large amount of things over the internet in as short of time as possible in order to cash in on a trend.

I’m not sure if there is anything “to do” about this except keep repeating what we know to be authentic to ourselves and our clients as well as patiently explain our point of view as it gets questioned again and again.

What is The Functional Skin Care Model?
Between You & The Moon's Functional Skincare Model is a visual model for analyzing the skin that links to Brooklyn Herborium's complete paradigm. It was developed to enable the practitioner to think, speak, and act in a holistic manner when assessing symptoms, total body care, and the well-being of the complete person.

Emma developed The Functional Skin Care Model as an analyzation method for our Holistic Aesthetician Practitioners to help identify and talk about how the skin is functioning in a holistic way. It takes a little time and effort to effectively learn it, but once you do it makes your ability pinpoint exactly what is going on for each individual client and what needs to be done in order to remedy the situation much quicker, easier, and more precise.

The unique images linked to each idea provide a concise way to organize your brain around the many different functions of the skin including what could go wrong with it, why it is happening, and what we can do about it. This image-based model is especially useful for visual learners and provides a short-hand way to describing everything we see in happening on the skin.

What is Functional Self-Care?
Functional Self Care is a systematic way of examining the human body's basic needs in order to see what needs are not being met so that we can gently nudge each client back to a place of equanimity--where everything just "functions" pretty well. It is the first step towards healing--sometimes it is the ONLY step that is needed since the problem was actually a lack of a basic need that the client may not have known about or that their other practitioners overlooked before!

Our self care recommendations are easy, safe, and enjoyable. There is no deprivation or extremism. The hardest part is usually getting the client (or the practitioner!) to believe that being NICE to themselves (and eating the things they ENJOY and using skin care products that FEEL GOOD) is also the HEALTHY option that can help them grow out of the dysfunction that they are experiencing.

Functional Skin Care is more than just simple suggestions to "improve your diet" or "increase your self-care" but instead specific recommendations that pinpoint topical conditions to the Functional Skin Care Model allowing the practitioner to recommend which self care practices or tiny changes in how they are eating their foods will result in immediate improvements.
