Commonly Asked Questions
How do I choose a Mineral Mist?
A: Your nose knows--simply spray each mist into the air in an effort to entice the olfactory nerves. Positive response (mmmm, ahhh) indicates a beneficial match! If your nose it not available for the task, you can also make a decision based on topical symptom or on specific body systems (chakras) that you wish to nourish .
The physical nature of what a Mineral Mist does (prevents dehydration and assists the body with mineral absorption) stays the same regardless of your choice--so there is no worry about making the wrong choice!
How do I know when to use what Oil in a Moisture Duo?
A: Nourish and Replenish Oil is great for most everyone. It is a well-balanced blend of nutrition and is the top recommended Oil for making a Moisture Duo (The oil-water emulsion that we use as a moisturizer).
NO EVIL is a very simple oil and can be used as the Oil portion of the Moisture Duo when someone has very, very sensitive and reactive skin or lots of allergies to plants. There are no “nutrients” it, but it does a great job of being a protective moisture barrier.
Cow Fart Juice is mainly used as a spot treatment over scabs and skin that is healing, but it can also be used as the oil portion of a Moisture Duo when the skin has large areas of broken skin or infection.
Seeds of Change is not recommended for use as part of your moisture combo for more than one week at a time, but it can be used in this way to kick-start a program for someone who has thick, hardened, sun-damaged skin. It can also be used once a week by most people as a “treatment” that gives just a little boost.
What is the difference between Cleansing and Exfoliating?
By cleansing, we refer to oil cleansing as the physical/chemical bond between the oil cleanser and the oil in the skin. We do not use soaps (they change the pH) or anything that lathers as a cleanser. Exfoliation (Using the Sow Your Wild Oats) gently removes the layers of dead skin and other intracellular debris. Many exfoliators are physical “scrubs” that are overly-irritating to the skin or use hard particles that do not break down. Sow your wild oats is Colloidal, which means that it becomes part of the water (and oil!) and that the exfoliation is achieved by the actual actions of the plant material we use.
Should I use a Cleansing Duo (add oil into SYWO) or Double Cleansing (First Oil Cleanse, then grain)?
If you are wearing makeup, it is a great idea to cleanse first with NO EVIL to take off make-up and then follow it up with your exfoliation (Sow Your Wild Oats, preferably with one of our supportive skin care oils mixed in). Additionally, It is always a good idea to boost the productivity of Sow Your Wild Oats with one of our Supportive Skin Care Oils.
How do I know when to use what Oil in a Cleansing Duo?
NO EVIL is gentle and effective and perfect for everyday use with Sow Your Wild Oats as part of your Cleansing Duo.
Seeds of Change is recommended for thick, hardened, sun-damaged skin. It can be used daily with Sow Your Wild Oats or as an Oil Cleanser if the skin can handle it and wants to see dramatic change. It can be used weekly for sensitive skin.
Cow Fart Juice makes an excellent addition to Sow Your Wild Oats when the skin has large areas of broken skin or infection. It also makes a lovely weekly treatment (especially while Steaming or in the shower) as part of a Cleansing Ritual for an added healing boost.
Nourish and Replenish Oil can certainly be used as part of a Cleansing Ritual by adding 10-15 drops into the Sow Your Wild oats before adding the water--but the product is precious and this is an expensive proposition. If you still want to use it (which, we admit, is lovely) you can use a few drops of N&R and the 10 drops of NO EVIL.
How often should I use Sow your wild oats?
Though most people can use Sow Your Wild Oats mixed with NO EVIL every day with no irritation, it is not necessary to do that much. Most of our clients find 3-5 times per week to be sufficient. However, there is the possibility that someone is not using it enough--especially if they are trying to bring dramatic changes to their skin or it has a lot of healing to do.
Another great thing about supportive skincare is that you are no longer trying to control what the skin is doing--you are simply nourishing and supporting its natural processes. If you skip a night (or even a week) nothing falls apart or goes “out of control”.
Who should steam clean? What herbs should they use?
Everyone but the most super-sensitive to heat does well with some steam cleaning, though those with blackheads and congestion find it to be especially beneficial in gently clearing out the pores without stripping the skin's protective lipid barrier. Don’t ever steam without an oil or Sow Your Wild Oats + Oil on the face. Not only does it protect the skin but it does double duty by making the product work better. Here are some ideas:
In your shower: If you take hot showers, be sure to keep your face out of the stream of water and remember to always add NO EVIL to protect your skin BEFORE getting it and use a washcloth to remove it before getting out. Simply apply Sow Your Wild Oats + 10-15 drops of NO EVIL before you get into the shower and remove with a textured (cotton, silk, hemp or linen) washcloth.
Between You & The Moon Herbal Steamer: Apply NO EVIL to the entire face. Put a little of our Herbal Steamer in the bottom of a bowl and pour boiling water over the herbs. Be very careful--boiling water and steam can BURN you! Make a tent around your head and the bowl with a towel while keeping about a foot away. It feels great to massage the oil around and you can really loosen up everything in your pores. Be sure to wipe clean with a warm wet washcloth when you are done! The Herbal Steamer is made up of herbs that protect and nourish the structural integrity of the skin as well as its surface biome. It is especially useful at the change of seasons or anytime there is infection or pus present. It is also really useful when you are experiencing a cold or sinus congestion. Don't forget to apply oil first and remove it with a warm wet washcloth. (You can splash with cooler water later if that feels good to you)
Stress Bump Tea: Makes an excellent facial steamer! Follow the directions as above and replace the Herbal Steamer Herbs with the Stress Bump Tea for your needs. While the Herbal Steamer is especially good for rehabilitating the skin, utilizing one of our Stress Bump Teas for this purpose focuses in increasing the skin's ability to function as an organ of elimination. When you get areas of underground lumps and bumps (we call these stress bumps) drinking the tea is a great way to help specific toxins to release into your urinary system--but if they are releasing through the skin, you can assist it by steaming with these herbs as well.
