Your Scope of Practice
It is YOUR job to stay within your scope of practice. We certainly can work alongside doctors and do things to improve the body’s functioning and overall health, but we do not diagnose and we do not prescribe (or un-prescribe!).
Don’t make the mistake of immediately assuming that doctors don’t know what they’re talking about or a keeping information from you. Doctors are highly educated and well-trained specialists who work in medicine. I also believe that most of the doctors who I’ve worked with went into medicine because they are caring people who want to make others better!
The fact of the matter is; when someone goes to a doctor, they are there paying for medical advice. Therefore, they will be treated with medicine.
If you are there asking for medicine, your doctor will do his or her job and give it to you. If you go to a doctor asking for a medicine to make something go away, they will give you something to suppress it--and it will go away (usually). If you want something to stop hurting, they will give you a pain-killer to stop the pain. It’s the way it works. This is medicine and it it something truly worthwhile that we hope that everyone can be grateful for.
But it is a very rare case when a doctor can dip into holistic health and guide their patients through what they need to do in order to optimize health. Beyond the fact that this is not “what they do”, doctors don’t have the time with each patient, insurance companies won’t cover it, and most patients are not going to follow through unless they are deeply invested and the people who are coming to them are rarely satisfied without immediate results. Therefore, a pill or a cream it is.
As supportive skin care specialists and holistic health practitioners, we do not practice medicine. It is not our job to replace the doctor or to “treat” any diseases. This is one of the reasons why we can work so well along-side both physicians or alternative practitioners. Most of the time, one has to choose between Eastern Medicine and Western Medicine, but we can improve the results of either.
We are not using any herbs or practices to encourage the skin to do anything that it doesn’t want to do or fix anything within a body system. We are simply trying to encourage the body to heal itself and to make those systems run is optimally as possible. This is not meant to replace any medication, though if the problem is resolved, the client may be able to work with their doctor to remove the medication especially suppressive medications in gentle ways.
